Kyzart to Song-Kul — On Horseback Through the Mountains

34km across alpine passes to one of Central Asia's most breathtaking lakes.

This is one of Kyrgyzstan's classic horse treks — and for good reason.

Starting from Kyzart Pass, you ride through remote valleys, cross two mountain passes, and spend a night with a nomadic family in Kilemche Jailoo before the final climb to Zhalguz Karagai Pass at 3,325 metres.

  • We meet in Bishkek early in the morning and drive to Kyzart village by comfortable transport — arriving around midday. After lunch at a local guesthouse, your guide will give a short horse-riding instruction before you set off. The trek begins from Kyzart and leads through wide mountain landscapes and fresh alpine air to Kilemche Valley. In the evening, you arrive at a local yurt camp — your home for the night. Explore the surroundings, observe nomadic life up close, and sit down to a home-cooked dinner before sleeping in a traditional yurt under the mountain sky.

  • The climb begins immediately after breakfast — a steady ride up to Zhalgyz Karagai Pass at 3,325m. Then Song-Kul appears. The lake stretches out below in every shade of blue and green, framed by rolling mountains on all sides. Descend to the yurt camp on the shore. The rest of the afternoon is yours — walk along the water, watch the horses graze, or simply sit as the light changes across the lake. Dinner in the yurt, then the night sky reflected in still water.

  • After breakfast, the morning ride continues around Song-Kul Lake before crossing Kara-Kiya Pass at 3,400 metres — a different angle, a different view of the landscape you arrived through two days ago. From the pass, you descend to Kyzart village for a final lunch at the guesthouse. Transfer back to Bishkek or Kochkor from here, according to your onward travel plans.
